Answer: 20th Wedding Anniversary with a Jamaican Theme

Hi!

What a great idea, and Happy Anniversary to your aunt and uncle.

With regard to the decorations, one of the main differences between a Jamaican theme and a Hawaiian luau theme is the color palette.

Hawaii's predominant luau colors are brown, fuchsia pink, bright greens, and other neon tones.

Jamaica's color scheme is similar to its flag which has black, kelly green, and bright yellow. Basically, the colors are more primary.

I would use black tablecloths with yellow fabric square overlays, table runners, or fabric panels that come down in front of a buffet table. Place large green tropical leaves in the table's center and clusters of red Anthuriums. Anthuriums are more Jamaican, whereas red ginger, Bird of Paradise, and Heliconia are more Polynesian. Use votive candles on the tabletops and tiki torches if the party is outside.

For napkins, go with green and make beaded Jamaican napkin rings. Check your local craft store for black vinyl cord and "pony" beads in the colors black, red, green, and yellow.

You can also use the black cord and pony, shell, or wood beads to make party favor necklaces for everyone. For a luau it would be flower leis for Jamaica its all about beads.

For a great wow effect, set up a big tropical photo mural with sand on the ground for people to take photos in front of. Add props such as beachcomber straw hats (more Caribbean but they'll work), and maybe a limbo stick! Place a Polaroid or digital camera nearby or use disposable cameras, which you could customize with "Happy Anniversary."

Place a basket at the party entrance containing flip flops that are silk-screened with "Happy Anniversary".

Don't forget a big "Happy Anniversary" banner and, of course, Reggae music!

Best, Jeanne
