Joe's Old Fashioned Cocktail

Confession: The best cocktail that we’ve ever made (and that we get the most compliments on) was actually a recipe that we stole from someone very close to us. We have to give credit to Claudia’s boyfriend Joe for the secret ingredients that make this drink so special. Joe owns a bar in New York City, and is known for having the best Old Fashioned cocktail in town.

If you’ve had an Old Fashioned, you know it’s bourbon, sugar, oranges and bitters. Although the traditional recipe is fine, Joe has crafted a recipe that's even better than the original. Read the recipe below to make an old fashioned that’s over-the-top better. The best part? It’s not any harder to make – you just need to add orange bitters to the traditional recipe, and swap regular sugar for brown sugar simple syrup!

This cocktail is perfect for the bourbon-lovers you know, especially during the fall months. Another perfect treat for your loved one who loves all things bourbon is the Bacon, Bourbon & Beer Market Box from 1-800-Baskets. Mix up one of these delicious Joe's Old Fashioned while noshing on these artisan chocolates and crispy seasoned bacon.

Ingredients
  •
  •
  •
  • 3 ounces of good Bourbon (like Michter’s)
  • The peel of one orange
  • 4 dashes orange bitters
  • 4 dashes regular bitters
  • Brown sugar simple syrup
  • Ice

Directions

Peel your orange, set aside. In a small saucepan over low heat, mix one half cup of brown sugar, and one half cup of water. Stir until sugar is fully dissolved. Let cool.

In two rocks glasses, pour 1 and 1/2 ounces of bourbon in each. Drizzle and stir in about a teaspoon each of the brown sugar simple syrup. Add two dashes each of both bitters. Divide orange peel in two, twist above each glass, and place inside. Add ice to finish.

Makes: 2
