Mardi Gras Cocktail: Low-Sugar Hurricane with Splenda Simple Syrup

The holiday of Mardi Gras that is celebrated just before the Catholic period of Lent can be translated literally to Fat Tuesday – everyone parties hard before a period of good behavior.

Well, just because it’s called Fat Tuesday you don’t need to load up on sugar when enjoying a traditional Mardi Gras cocktail! We spent many a fun afternoon tinkering with this delicious and rum and fruit juice-filled concoction trying to cut down on calories.

Don’t worry – we still kept all of the flavor and wild debauchery that goes with it!  We kept the drink festive too, with a colored sugar rim and festive purple chevron straw. Enjoy this Mardi Gras cocktail and all of the fun that unfolds!

Ingredients
  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 2 ounces passion fruit juice
  • 1 ounce sugar free or low sugar orange juice
  • Juice of a half a lime
  • 1 tablespoon simple syrup (We used 1/2 pack of natural sugar-free sweetener and a tablespoon of water)
  • 1 teaspoon grenadine (we used the juice in a jar of Maraschino cherries)
  • Orange slice and cherry for garnish
Directions

Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker and shake just until mixed. Pour into a glass with ice. Garnish with an orange slice and a Maraschino cherry.

Makes: 2 cocktails
