Whiskey for Dessert: Brown Sugar Bourbon Apples

There are two things we believe make any fall dessert better – brown sugar, and bourbon! Yep, the bold, smoky bourbon is the perfect ingredient for all of your fall desserts. Once you try these sweet baked apples, you'll totally agree – and wonder why you haven't been using bourbon in more of your desserts!

These delicious baked apples make the perfect autumnal dessert. Baking them breaks down the hardness of the apples, melts the sugar just a bit, and cooks off most of the alcohol of the bourbon, leaving just a rich hint of mellow whiskey taste.

They are simple to make and will leave your whole house filled with a cinnamon fragrance. Whip them up for a quick and delcious Thanksgiving dessert, or for a festive fall dinner party. Either way, your guests will be begging you for the recipe!

Ingredients
  • 4 baking apples (such as Cortland, Empire, Gala, Braeburn, or Pippin)
  • 1/4 cup chopped candied or plain nuts
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar or 5 tsp Splenda Brown Sugar Blend
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Directions

Heat oven to 400° F. Remove and discard the cores from the apples. Place the apples in a 9- by-13-inch baking dish.

In a small bowl, combine the nuts, sugar, butter and bourbon. Divide the mixture among the apples. (You can cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours). Bake until tender, about 25 minutes.
