Savory Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

For those of us who want to surprise our moms with something sweet and savory, I have a drool-worthy recipe that is sure to be the hit of this year's Mother's Day brunch.

If you're expecting company for a Mother's Day brunch, pop these cinnamon rolls into the oven about 20 minutes before guests arrive. By the time everyone comes in and is ready for brunch, the delicious aroma of these mouthwatering rolls will have filled the house. Everyone will be eager to dig in!

For the Cinnamon Rolls:

  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons melted margarine
  • 2 and 1/4 cups bread flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 and 1/4 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

For the Icing:

  • 3 ounces (about 1/2 package) softened cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

For the Cinnamon Rolls:

Place all cinnamon roll ingredients in the pan of the bread machine except cinnamon and brown sugar (follow order recommended by manufacturer.) Start machine (after selecting 'dough cycle'.)

Lightly flour counter surface. After dough doubles in size, turn it out onto surface, cover, and let it rest for 10 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll dough and form into rectangle. Brush dough with 1/3 cup butter and sprinkle sugar/cinnamon mixture.

Roll up dough and cut into 12 rolls. Place rolls in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, approximately 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Bake rolls until golden brown, about 15 minutes.

For the Icing:

While rolls are baking, beat together cream cheese, butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract and salt.

Using a spoon or whisk, drizzle frosting on warm rolls before serving.

Makes: About a dozen rolls
