New-Fashioned Ginger Cocktail Recipe

As the crisp fall air breezes through the auburn and gold-colored trees, it’s the perfect time to sip on a smoky bourbon cocktail to savor the gorgeous fall season. Fittingly enough, September is National Bourbon Heritage Month, a celebration declared by the US Senate in 2007 to recognize the tradition and legacy of bourbon in American culture.

In honor of the month-long celebration, we’ve created a delicious New-Fashioned Ginger Cocktail. It’s a twist on the classic Old Fashioned, made instead with fresh ginger, tangy orange juice and a splash of club soda.

Although Maker's 46 is typically considered a sipping bourbon, I used it in this delicious fall cocktail. Maker’s 46 (released in 2010 -- the brand's first new bourbon in 52 years) is aged a bit longer than traditional Maker’s but also has stronger hints of caramel and vanilla. It is aged with oak, which makes for notable hints of wood. In this recipe, the spiciness of the fresh ginger complements the robust wood taste, and is balanced out by the sweet flavors in the bourbon and orange juice.

I served my drink in a whisky glass with one big block ice cube, to keep the cocktail cool without diluting it. However, you can also serve in a whisky glass over standard ice cubes.

This cocktail is the perfect balance of sweet, yet bold flavors, and is a great seasonal sipper enjoyed slowly.

  • 2 ounces bourbon (I used Maker’s 46)
  • Club soda (optional)
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • Fresh ginger root
  • Orange rind

Cut 3-4 thin pieces of ginger from the ginger root. Place on the bottom of empty whisky glass, and muddle for about 30 seconds (or until slightly broken apart) with a muddler or the back of a spoon.

Remove ginger from glass, and add ice.

In a cocktail shaker, combine bourbon, orange juice and club soda if desired. Shake, and pour into whisky glass. Add orange rind.

Makes: 1 cocktail
