St. Patrick's Day Party Hack: Upcycled Picture Frame Serving Tray

Sure, you've stocked up on Guinness, Irish whiskey and green popcorn. But if you haven't given much thought to your St. Patrick's Day party, we have a fun and festive DIY tutorial that will really impress your guests.

Serve all of your favorite St. Patrick's Day snacks on one of our Upcycled Picture Frame Serving Trays. If, for some reason, you're not like the rest of us and don't have a million unused picture frames lying around, hit up your local thrift store for large frames and paint (if desired). Just make sure to scrub the heck out of them before serving food on them.

Picture frames are the perfect backdrop for a tray because you can slide in any color fabric, wrapping paper or card stock that you like to fit the theme. With just some wooden dowels (we got ours on Amazon) and wood glue, you can have a themed serving tray that will really impress your guests. Plus, you can re-purpose it for pretty much any upcoming holiday or occasion!

We stocked our trays with sour green apple and rainbow popcorn from The Popcorn Factory, Guinness (duh), frosted shamrock cookies from Cheryl's and a cute Leprechaun Milk Bottle, to match. To see how we put it all together, check out our video!

  • Large picture frame
  • Fabric, wrapping paper or cardstock
  • Wooden dowels
  • Wood glue, hot glue or super glue
  • Paint (optional, if painting picture frame and dowels)
  • Scissors

Step 1: Start by cleaning your frame, especially the glass surface, thoroughly. If painting the frame and dowels, make sure all surfaces are dry and free from dust and dirt.

Step 2:  Remove the frame from the glass, and once completely dry from being cleaned, prime and paint your frame and dowels. Craft paint or spray paint work well. Set aside to dry.

Step 3:  Once completely dry, assemble frame. Cut fabric or wrapping paper to fit glass. Secure behind the glass, making sure the surface is smooth and free of wrinkles.

Step 4:  Flip over, and secure dowels to base (with the open side facing up, so that the solid side is what's being glued) using glue of choice. Wait up to 20 minutes to dry.

Step 5:  Flip over, place your snacks on, serve and enjoy!
