Fruit and Vegetable Painting Craft for Kids

Kids can create their own mini masterpieces using apples, carrots, celery, and peppers. Read on for the creative and fun how-to!

Gather up some fresh fruits and vegetables, and you’ve got all the supplies you need to help kids make their own stamps! They can then use those stamps to create some mini-masterpieces. Kids will love printing on plain white paper with the fruits and vegetables and discovering all of the shapes and designs that are possible using sliced apples, carrots and celery. Who ever said fruit was just for eating?!

I usually cut one piece of produce for each stamp, and then I use the rest of the fruits and veggies to make up a big tray for the children to munch on as they explore the printing process. It's a great summertime activity, with the added bonus of having an opportunity for healthy snacking built right in!

Apples, carrots, celery, bell peppers

Acrylic paint

Dinner-size paper plates

Sponge applicators

White craft or artist paper

Colored markers

Step 1: Cut each piece of produce so that you have a flat surface or edge for printing.  Blot the surface with a paper towel to remove any moisture.

Step 2: Set out the fruit and vegetable stampers, then squirt various colors of acrylic paint onto flat, dinner-size paper plates.

Step 3: Now it's up to the kids. They can use the stamps and colors to create a work of art!  Some fruits and vegetables work best when dipped directly into the paint and then stamped onto the paper.  Others, such as the apple, seem to print better when the paint is applied to the stamping surface with a sponge applicator.

Step 4: Allow the paintings to dry completely.

Step 5: If they’d like, kids can also add more detail to the finished product, using colored markers.

Frame the kids’ artwork or place it on an easel.  It will be a cheery addition to your home!
