Fall Mobile Craft for Kids

I love the gentle breeze that fall always brings along with the view of the branches swaying until that very last leaf drops to the floor. Creating a mobile to hang on those bare fall branches is the perfect way to celebrate the natural elements of Fall while adding a little decorative flair to your bare trees at the same time.

This project is simple enough that anyone as young as 6 can do this unsupervised, but the truth is there is so much fun in doing this together that I joined in and created my own!

This mobile was created by my 5 year old son, and our biggest issue was trying to find a place strong enough to hang his treasure laden mobile.

Not only is this a simple craft, but it can also be very inexpensive. We went to our local charity shop and bought a collection of wicker bowls to use as our mobile shades (along with a bag of plastic autumn leaves as ours have not yet started falling), but you can also fasten 2 sticks crossed together and use freshly fallen leaves for a nearly free crafting project.

  • A variety of leaves
  • Pine Cones or other fall treasures
  • Wire
  • Scissors
  • A wicker bowl or something to act as the mobile shade

Step 1: Collect your leaves and treasures into groups and place them on your table.

Step 2: Cut a variety of long lengths of wire, enough to hang every 2 inches across the rim of your shade, and then fasten them to the shade by twisting and tying them into place.

Step 3: Begin adding the leaves and treasures to the wire by twisting the wire around each piece and continue until you have a completed mobile.

Step 4: Once complete, hang in a tree or in an outbuilding.
