DIY Paper Heart Garland Curtain

Party decorating projects that are inexpensive, yet provide a great deal of visual interest and drama are just the sort savvy planners love to use at events.

Paper garlands cost just a few cents worth of paper and thread if you already own scrapbook punches, and take a relatively short amount of time to feed through a sewing machine to make.

You can substitute any variety of shapes for the hearts we used for our Valentine’s Day party, circles, squares, diamonds…anything will really work here! For the project here, we used all white, but you can vary the color scheme depending on the chosen theme and color scheme for your party.

  • Card stock (color of your choice)
  • Heart-shaped scrapbook punch in two sizes
  • Coordinating thread for your sewing machine

Step 1: Punch heart shapes of the two different sizes/shapes - at least 5 to 6 sheets of card stock to create several 6 foot strings. Thread your sewing machine and bobbin with thread that compliments the color of your card stock.

Step 2: Place the foot of the sewing machine in the down position. Slowly feed the heart through the machine. When the heart comes through stitched, gently pull on the heart to create distance between the paper hearts. The beauty of this project is that everything should come out perfectly imperfect in order to be visually appealing. In random order, feed the small and large hearts through the machine in order to create long strings of garland. The stitch does not have to be perfectly through the middle, and the hearts do not have to be equally spaced as you are sewing them together.

Step 3: If you’d like to create a curtain effect, snip the garlands into equal length strips and tie the tops to a single string of twine or other material.
