DIY Kid-Friendly Magnetic Hand Board

Give the back to school season a high-five with this simple crafting project that children as old as 9 will enjoy creating. What I love most about this child friendly craft is that it has multiple purposes. First, it captures their September hand print, allowing you to compare it to their June handprint, a comparison that will be fun for everyone. The little ones will love seeing just how much they have grown in that short year! Second, it gives those school year memories a place to live and be enjoyed, rather than strewn around the bedroom.

Your supplies don’t need to be new, either. You can either repurpose an old magnetic board or buy a new one, and use an old brush or bottle of paint instead of spending money on a new one. This hand board is not only simple to make with absolutely no crafting skills required, but is also a fun project that captures time and memories that will be cherished by the whole family.

  • 1 Magnetic board
  • A bottle of Acrylic Crafting Paint
  • Acrylic Sealant
  • 1 Foam Brush
  • 1 Permanent Marker

Step 1: Wipe the magnetic board clean and ensure it is dry.

Step 2: Using the marker, have the child write their name on the board and then date the board.

Step 3: Place a dry palm on the board to determine where you want the hand print to go, and then cover the palm of the hand with a thick coat of paint using the foam brush.

Step 4: Position the palm on the board and press, holding it there for a moment and then lifting up from the board taking care note to smear the print.

Step 5: Allow the board to dry for 1-2 hours before spraying the sealant on the board. Once the sealant is dry, position in their room and start using the board.
