DIY Kid-Friendly Father's Day Ceramic Mugs

Give the father in your life a gift that he will actually use and one that will remind him of his creative kid! This is a cost-efficient and simple way to give a personalized gift and your child will feel proud every time they see their dad drinking out of the mug.

It is a craft that only requires a mug and a few sharpies. You can find the mug in a thrift store, dollar store or craft store for a few dollars. Make sure to use an oil based sharpie (rather than water based) so that it will last through the washes. If you want to guarantee that nothing will come off even after use in a dishwasher, you can use an acrylic sealer to coat the decorated mug.

Have your child draw on the mug with the sharpies - it could be pictures, designs, or a list of their dad's best qualities. Even if your child is very young (my daughter is two and a half years old), they can participate. Just let them go to town and decorate however they want. I wrote the words in black and let my daughter decorate it with different colors. She was delighted that she was allowed to draw on a cup and was equally proud to present it to her dad as something she did herself.

Supplies
  • White ceramic mug
  • Sharpie permanent markers (oil-based Sharpies work best)
  • Acrylic sealer
Directions

Step 1: Make sure your mugs are completely clean and dry.

Step 2: Use the Sharpie markers to decorate the mugs in any way you like.

Step 3: Let them dry overnight.

Step 4: Put the mugs in a cold oven. Then turn the oven on to 350 degrees, and leave the mugs in there for 30 minutes. After the oven heats up, turn it off and wait for it to completely cool.

Step 5: Remove mugs from the oven, gift and enjoy!
