Kentucky Derby Recipes: Biscuits to Burgoo

Don your fancy hats, break out your pewter cups for those delicious Mint Juleps, and get ready to watch the best horse race of the year! Even if you can't be in Louisville for the big event, you can still throw one amazing party to celebrate all things Kentucky Derby.

If you are planning on hosting a party to watch the derby, then there are a few essential Kentucky-inspired recipes you'll need to make sure you add to your menu. The actual race only take two minutes, so you're going to need plenty of delicious courses to keep guests occupied. These are some of my favorite creative finds to serve up on race-day.

  • Chips and dip are a must have at most parties, and everyone certainly appreciates something delicious to snack on while they are waiting for the main course. This Roasted Garlic Parmesan Cheese Dip recipe over on The Beerness has just about every delicious ingredient you could imagine - including beer! This may go down as one of the most creative cheese dips I've ever seen and it will certainly have guests asking for the secret ingredient.

  • For your next appetizer option, I highly recommend these Kentucky Hot Brown Bites. Apparently this delicious treat takes its name from a hotel in Louisville that created a unique combination of turkey, bacon and Mornay sauce. Save the knives and forks by creating a bite size option with crescent rolls and a muffin pan.

  • Everyone knows and loves the delicious Mint Julep drink, so why not incorporate those flavors into one of your dishes? These Mint Julep Chicken Skewers take traditional Mint Julep ingredients such as bourbon, mint leaves and brown sugar, and kicks things up a notch. Serve them up with mint leave garnishes and skewers to allow guest to easily enjoy them through out the party.

  • A southern-inspired dinner menu simply wouldn't be complete without some amazing buttermilk biscuits. We are celebrating all things Kentucky after all! Biscuits are always a must have on my list and give the dinner a great home-cooked feel. These Kentucky Biscuits are perfect served hot with butter, jam and some honey.

  • Burgoo is known as the unofficial stew of Kentucky and is therefor a must-have when hosting the ultimate Kentucky Derby party. Traditional prepared with a mixture of ingredients and in large batches, this is certainly not a simple dish to prepare. This Kentucky Bourbon Burgoo recipe calls for pork, veal, beef, lamb AND chicken! However, the delicious end result of this classic dish is well worth the effort!

  • Now that we've rounded up some delicious appetizers and southern comfort foods for the main course, it's time to talk about the perfect Kentucky Derby party dessert! Complete with a bourbon butter sauce and mint frosting, these chocolate Mint Julep Cupcake are the perfect way to round out your Kentucky Derby menu. Who could resist such a delicious flavor combination?

  • After dinner has been served and dessert has been eaten, it's time to sit back and enjoy the race! If you still want to give your guests something extra to nibble on or have some new-comers who didn't get to enjoy the main course, you can always serve a sweet snack like this Bacon Maple Carmel Corn. Once again this recipe brings a little taste of the south to your Kentucky Derby party with its delicious ingredients.
