Bring the Holiday Cheer: Clever Christmas Theme Party Ideas

If you’ve been to a Christmas party within the last 10 years, odds are at some point you donned a Goodwill-purchased, cat and mistletoe-covered sweater and attended an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party.

Not to knock that particular theme – it’s always fun every year, and makes getting dressed relatively easy – but if you’re ready to throw a Christmas party that’s a little more creative and a little less stale, take a look at some of our favorite theme party ideas.

If you’re entertaining a more fun and laid-back crowd, throw an “Elfin’ Good Time” Christmas party, complete with tiny green hats, finger food and the quintessential Will Ferrell movie quotes displayed everywhere. If your guests have more sophisticated tastes, throw a retro “It’s a Wonderful Life” party, complete with elegant cocktails and décor.

For guests that have a fine appreciation for details, host a chevron or peppermint-themed party. With your house decked out in all things theme-related and color-coordinated, it's sure to make a holly jolly impression.

  • Favorite Christmas Movie Character

"Christmas Vacation," "A Christmas Story, "Elf." There are so many good Christmas movies, it's hard to narrow down which ones have the best characters. For a fun and laid-back theme party, have your guests dress as their favorite character. Cousin Eddie from "Christmas Vacation" is always a win, in my book.

  • 'Nightmare Before Christmas'

For a really unconventional Christmas party, throw a "Nightmare Before Christmas" bash. If your guests love the movie, or aren't ready to let go of the Halloween spirit, it's perfect. A black Christmas tree and themed cookies like the display featured on Off Beat Mama add the perfect touch.

  • Elfin' Good Time

To honor Santa's little helpers up on the North Pole, and the hit Will Ferrell movie, serve mini foods and deck your house out in Elf-themed decor for an Elfin' good time. This party featured on Kara's Party Ideas went all-out.

  • Chevron

The chic pattern is still in style, especially for the holidays. For a more subtle but fashionable theme, opt for all things chevron. Napkins, napkin rings, cookie sleeves -- you name it, you can put chevron on it for some seasonal decor,as featured on The Celebration Shoppe.

  • Nutcracker

The holiday's most famous ballet is such a Christmas tradition, it would be a shame not to celebrate it in an elegant themed party, like this one on Catch my Party. with displaying your nutcracker and serving nuts, serve beautifully colored candy in honor of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and a gingerbread cookie cocktail.

  • 'It's a Wonderful Life'

The 1946 movie starring Jimmy Stewart had its heart-wrenching moments, but the overall message of the movie is positive and uplifting. Have a throwback Christmas party with outfits, decor and cocktails from the '40s to put your guests in a jazzy retro mood.

  • Peppermint Party

Candy canes are not only the candy of the season, they're also the flavor. Incorporate red and white stripes into your decor, and serve peppermint-flavored treats for your Christmas party. This party featured on Hostess with the Mostess includes peppermints all throughout the glam event.
