All That Glitters Is Not A Golden Globes Party

The Hollywood party scene has been a bit deflated by the cancellation of the Golden Globes Award Ceremony this Sunday night. Due to the ongoing writer's strike, guild writers may not script a televised show, and SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) actors are supporting the striking WGA (Writer's Guild of America) by boycotting the event. FYI: The WGA is striking to get fair pay for their work on the Internet and other new media avenues.

However, in place of the traditional TV awards show, with celebs sitting at their party tables dressed in their party best, there will be a one-hour press conference, sans stars, at the Beverly Hills Hilton, where the award recipients will be announced. News programs are under a different contract than scripted shows, and a press conference is in the "news" category.

While I'm all for the strike, I am going to miss seeing the stars walk the red carpet, and the spectacle of the celebrities toasting each other at their dinner tables. I'm always curious as to what flowers are in the centerpieces, and what brand of Champagne everyone is drinking.

I also love when they cut back to the show after commercial, and grab shots of celebs chatting it up. I remember one year Meryl Streep was flirting with Rob Lowe, and Warren Beatty seems to know everyone. Jack Nicholson is always at some table in the front, commenting like a heckler at a comedy club, and Robin Williams usually has a place at the foot of the stage, in case he needs to jump up and vamp for a winning celeb late to the podium for their acceptance speech.

I'm sure the nominees will have their private parties around town, and it's a bummer for all of us who love the glimpse of glamour on TV. But the main thing on my mind is this...

WILL THE OSCARS BE CANCELLED TOO?

Maybe. The WGA needs to grant them a waiver in order for the show to go on, unless they settle the strike. Now, I've never hosted a Golden Globe Party, but the Oscar's are a real occasion to celebrate! Although we don't see the Governor's Ball on TV, which is the official Academy Awards after-party, the hype leading up to it is fantastic. Wolfgang Puck, who creates the dinner party menu, is so inventive with his courses and award-themed desserts sculpted out of chocolate! Sequoia Productions, who orchestrates the Ball, pulls together all the talents of the party world for a stunning event. You can see what they did for the Emmy Awards Party in an article I wrote about how to create your own Emmy Party at home, and check out their website for the official recipes from that event.

In any event, we'll have you covered at Celebrations with ideas for you to host your own Oscar Party at home, no matter what's on TV. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 24, and you can check the Oscar's website for updates, plus I'll post any party news here!
