Unique Locations For A Celebration
My wedding reception took place around a carousel enclosed by a glass structure on Santa Monica pier. Our more traditional relatives were a little baffled that we chose a merry-go-round by the beach, rather than a dining hall. However, after riding the horses all night, gazing at the Pacific Ocean, our location choice was appreciated by all.
How many parties have you attended in that one dining hall that everyone rents? It's not that the hall is the least expensive option it's merely a convenient choice. Or perhaps you weren't aware of the unique venues available for parties? An exciting location sets the stage for an outstanding event. Is there a grand library in the town with a lovely garden? Chances are the garden has been rented as a party location and the cost or donation to the library may even be tax deductible. Start your venue research with some of these ideas.
8 Ways To Find A Unique Location
1. Call civic organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, and ask to speak to someone about renting an event location for a private party.
2. Inquire at historical societies, cultural associations, or fraternal groups, who often have large fundraisers.
3. Scan the government or city pages at the front of the phone book for public structures or interesting venues, as well as offices such as the parks and recreation department.
4. Check in the phone book under "party planners" and "event locations". Research anything having to do with parties from retail suppliers to rental vendors who have made deliveries to many events in your area.
5. Go to wedding or party websites to research regional event location listings.
6. Search online using word combinations like, "party event location Des Moines."
7. Contact real estate agents who may know of someone who will rent their home or backyard.
8. If you live in an area where movies are filmed, call a location scout, or a local Screen Actor's Guild office. They may be able to point you in the right direction. After you've done your research, visit the locations that sound interesting.
Most venues will have an experienced person to meet with you and explain their site details. Though, it's always good to be prepared. Bring a camera and a list of questions, such as these below, in addition to your own.
Aquarium
Beach House
Private Boat & Pier
Dance or Yoga Studio

10 Questions To Ask When Renting A Location
1. Do you provide items like tables, chairs, glassware, or linen, and is the cost included in the rental price? A location providing these items is a big plus! Rentals can be very costly, especially when you tack on roundtrip delivery.
2. What facilities will I have access to? You want to make sure that there are safe, clean restrooms nearby, and a working kitchen if necessary.
3. How late can I play amplified music? Many public places have a noise ordinance that might cramp your plans for an all-nighter.
4. Is there an extra charge for the use of your air conditioner or heat? A few years ago, I was installing the decor for an event at a popular historic location in Los Angeles. When the temperature reached 100 degrees, we inquired about the air conditioner, only to find that it was an extra $400 for 4 hours.
5. What about parking? Many public places don't offer parking, and the additional cost can be steep.
6. Are there any activities, beyond the obvious, that are not allowed or would require a special permit? Most locations do not allow candles or alcohol consumption without a special permit. More notably, some older locations will not allow dancing on their newly restored floor!
7. Do you have any photos of previous events? Any photos of events around the same time as my party? It's great to see the location brought to life by an actual party. Not only will you get ideas for event set-up and decor, you can avoid any pitfalls like putting the buffet table in direct sunlight.
8. Can you recommend any vendors? The location may have special rates with certain vendors, and the vendor might have some pointers the site.
9. May I have a list of references? It's always smart to check references, and make sure that most people had a good experience with the location and personnel.
10. Is there anything I haven't thought of to ask, or any other advice you can offer?
